Oral Cancer

The idea of oral cancer is, of course, one that is difficult to think about. At The Square Advanced Dental Care we consider it vital to offer oral cancer screening so that any symptoms are caught out allowing early diagnosis and treatment.

Oral cancer is a dangerous abnormal growth that can affect any part of the mouth. It can appear as an ulcer, often painless, that doesn’t clear up after a two week period, a swelling or growth that doesn’t disappear after a two week period or sometimes as a white or red patch in the mouth. If you experience any of these symptoms its important you make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

It’s not always clear why oral cancer develops but those at higher risk are those who chew or smoke tobacco. High levels of alcohol consumption can also greatly increase the risk of developing oral cancer and the combination of both increases the risk further. The chance of developing oral cancer is higher in those over 40 but younger people are at risk too and an unhealthy diet is also considered to be a factor.

The Square Dental takes the approach that regular check-ups are vital in early detection of oral cancers. We examine the facial and neck areas for any abnormality feeling under the jaw and down the neck. We survey the inside of the mouth with specialist equipment checking lips, cheeks, tongue, throat and the roof of the mouth. This kind of check-up allows the dentist to see parts of the mouth that cannot easily be checked by yourself and if the dentist notices anything that requires further exploration you will be referred to a specialist.
